Kantor Family Gallery at Hyde Park Art Center
This is a sculptural wall piece consisting of over 50 uniquely screen-printed drywall shims. "Shims" are a "thin, often tapered piece of material (such as wood, metal, or stone) used to fill in space between things (as for support, leveling, or adjustment of fit) level a space" merriam-webster.com. Women's rights require a leveling...equality. The choice of this material confronts that reality in a practical and possibly humorous manner. After all, what is more manly than a construction grade shim? The repetition of the material forces the viewer to confront many, many areas that need leveling. The work is installed with brass tacks and three dark grey steel nails, representing my three children. This work is titled "untitled shims" and is 6 feet by six feet by 4 inches as pictured. It includes wave imagery and colors inspired by the Papinta dancer video. (this work is currently on view at the Hyde Park Art Center and available for purchase through that space and proceeds will be split to benefit community programming and support my practice in 2025.)
